Southeast of the Bahamas in the North Atlantic Ocean are two
island groups known as Turks and Caicos. Part of the Bahamas
until 1959, they are still considered a British colony. You can
get to them in about an hour via plane from Miami, making them a
great, quick getaway that isn't too far away. They are divided
into nine main regions including, Caicos Islands, Providenciales,
North Caicos, Middle Caicos, East Caicos, South Caicos, West
Caicos, Grand Turk, and the Turks Islands. As you can clearly
see, there are quite a few different, exciting places you can
visit if you decide to travel to Turks and Caicos.
Things to Do in Turks and Caicos
Provo Golf Club - This is a
Championship Golf Course with 18 holes. It's a favorite stop
for traveling golfers.
Scuba Diving - Whether you
want to dive to see the underwater sea turtles or other
beauties of the ocean, there are plenty of places to do this
on the islands.
Eating - As you might
imagine, being an island, sea food is a large part of the
local cuisine.
Sleeping - There are quite
a few high quality resorts on the islands. As well, if you
want something that is a little more affordable, there are
options that still aren't very bad.
Shopping - Many people have
said that Saltmills plaza and Regent Village in Grace Bay are
some of the better shopping destinations on the island.
Places to See in Turks and Caicos
Cockburn Town - This is the
capital of Turks and Caicos.
Other Cities - Cockburn
Harbour, Bottle Creek and Blue Hills are a few of the other
larger cities on the islands.
Cays - From the Ambergris
Cays to the Seal Cays to Salt Cay to Pine Cay, these islands
offer different areas for you to explore and enjoy.
Things to Note about Turks and Caicos
The people of the islands are very kind and welcoming toward
stranger. That said, you should treat everyone with respect if
you want to be treated that way in return. Being conscious of
the fact that you are a visitor in their home is important if
you want to have a smooth vacation. Good manners will take you a
long way on the island - and in the rest of your life too!
As for getting to the islands, you can travel by plane or
boat. Once on the island, if you can rent a vehicle this may be
the best way for you to get around. If you decide to do this,
remembering to drive on the left side of the road is important.
The weather on Turks and Caicos is more arid than the rest of
the Caribbean. While it gets very little rainfall each year, it
isn't quite a desert either. Temperatures range in the 70s and
80s during the winter months with temperatures in the summer
reaching the 90s most of the time. If you are looking for a
place in the Caribbean that is a little less wet or tropical
than the rest, this collection of islands might be perfect for
you.
Going to Turks and Caicos
You will want to be as safe as you are anywhere else on the
planet if you decide to travel to Turks and Caicos, but that is
to be expected in the modern world. Overall, the islands are a
great, safe place to spend a little time relaxing and getting
away without getting soaked during rainy season or brought down
by temperatures that are too high.
